The Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) will host the Kwese Sevens Tournament in Harare from the 23rd to the 24th of March 2019, this is the third edition of the tournament which was previously hosted in Victoria Falls.
This year’s tournament will feature eight seniors men’s teams and four ladies teams.
ZRU Vice-President Losson Mtongwiza says moving the tournament from Victoria Falls to Harare posts several advantages to the union and local rugby fans.
“The move to Harare is for logistical and cost efficiency, we believe that the cutting down of costs while maintaining a competitiveness will be achieved by moving the event to Harare Sports Club.
You will also note that hosting any sporting event in Harare will also attract bigger crowds and this give the people of Harare another big tournament to enjoy.
Kwese has done some great things for rugby in Africa and being title sponsors of the tournament they will put 120% effort to ensure that this is a success once again” said Mtongwiza.
Hosts Zimbabwe having won the inaugural tournament but lost it last year to the feisty Kenya Sevens in the final, have placed a lot of this year’s hopes on Head Coach Gilbert Nyamutsamba who was named the Coach of the year at the 2018 Annual National Sports Awards on Friday in Harare.
“Fresh from retaining the Coach of the year award The Seven’s Rugby Coach Gilbert Nyamutsamba is very excited ahead of the Kwese Sevens tournament. The team failed to retain the team of the year award and they will be working really hard to ensure that they capture this tournament,” said Mtongwiza.
International teams Uganda, Zambia and Georgia have already confirmed their attendance for the 2019 edition of the event.
